Authorities were seeking additional people who fired weapons during a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded, police said Sunday, as a 19-year-old suspect remained in custody and investigators sought to unravel what happened. For the first half of 2026, when it comes to securities class actions, the plaintiffs bar is winning, according to Gallagher. In a new report on the lawsuits targeting directors and officers, Gallagher said total settlement dollars increased sharply. After six months, settlements totaled $2.1 billion, a 48% increase over the same period last year. There were 48 settlements compared with 41 in H1 2025. Of the settlements in H1 2026, 21% were greater than $50 million, Gallagher reported. Three Texas homeowners filed a federal racketeering lawsuit last week alleging that the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association fraudulently reduced claim estimates for properties damaged by Hurricane Beryl. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, alleges TWIA partnered with a vendor who made significant alterations to the original claims estimate made by a field adjuster. TWIA then sent the estimate to the policyholder under the premise that the estimate was the original, the lawsuit says.
