The world’s top maritime piracy observer said incidents off the coast of Somalia are on the rise again after a pair of fresh attacks this week — as two major regional conflicts stretch naval forces in the area thin. Yemen’s Houthis said last month that they would block Saudi Arabia’s ports and targeted several vessels, forcing many ships to avoid the area. At the same time, the Iran war brought chaos to the industry with dozens of freighters attacked in and around the Persian Gulf. (Editor’s note: This article was published by Bloomberg on Aug. 21). Naval authorities this week…

Hawaii’s Big Island is preparing for another round of flooding rain, roughly a week after Storm Lala washed out roads and damaged parts of the electrical grid. Another five to 10 inches of rain are expected through the weekend, with as much as 15 inches in some parts of the Big Island, according to an update from the US National Hurricane Center. The system is forecast to reach tropical-storm strength Friday, when it would be assigned the name Moke. The rainfall “may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in steep terrain and over areas that were affected recently by Lala,”…
Several members of the hemp industry are filing an additional lawsuit against the state of Texas alleging the ban on nearly all hemp-derived THC products has led to massive job loss and has created a monopoly for the state’s medical marijuana program. On Wednesday, four hemp retailers filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas against the Texas Department of State Health Services, alleging the agency has engaged in executive overreach by classifying hemp-derived substances as illegal, which violates the 2018 Farm Bill, which removed them from the federal Controlled Substances Act. “Thousands of…
Explosions rocked an Ohio industrial recycling business earlier this week, killing two workers and sparking a large fire, officials said. Flames and dark smoke poured from Brent Industries in Toledo on Tuesday as fire engines surrounded the building, TV news video showed. Crews later discovered the bodies of two employees, a man and a woman, inside the smoldering building, said Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong. Two or three other employees had minor injuries, she said. Two explosions occurred shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday, during a shift change, Armstrong said. Crews had to deal with hazardous materials, runoff and the threat…
Tens of thousands of people in northwest Indiana remained without power Wednesday, more than a week after deadly storms leveled trees and knocked down power lines across the region. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. said crews were working nonstop to fix the outages, but 75,000 customers still lacked electricity by late afternoon, mostly in Lake County next to the Illinois border. They included more than 20,000 customers in Gary, where residents lined up again at community centers for hot meals and a place to charge phones. The latest news for Gary wasn’t good: Full restoration is not expected there until…
Tesla Inc. and at least eight other carmakers are recalling millions of cars in China over safety concerns with their door handles, a major step to address flaws that have led to vehicle entrapment and multiple fatalities. More than 4 million vehicles are affected as part of the broad crackdown, one of the most sweeping recalls ever in the world’s biggest auto market. Tesla accounts for the largest share, with just under 3 million vehicles included in the action announced Friday. The Tesla vehicles have electrically controlled handles that can stop working in some crashes, which “could hinder occupants from…
Asset manager Apollo Global Management suffered a data breach last month in which hackers stole some personal information, according to a letter on Friday. The New York-based firm was among dozens of prominent U.S. financial institutions and other businesses that were recently targeted by ransom-seeking hackers who use phone calls to compromise their victims, Reuters reported earlier this month. Apollo said its investigation found there was unauthorized access to certain cloud platforms between July 6 and July 10. The firm notified law enforcement and engaged outside cybersecurity and forensic experts to investigate the breach. The company earlier this month learnt…
A Georgia man burglarized former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle’s home after learning Biffle and his family died in a plane crash, a North Carolina sheriff said Tuesday. Terrell Williams, 44, has been charged with second-degree burglary, safe cracking, money laundering and other felonies, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell announced at a news conference. Williams was being held without bond in Cobb County, Georgia, on suspicion of another home burglary. Jail records did not list an attorney. Campbell said investigators were led to Williams in July, when Cobb County police arrested him and found items taken from Biffle’s home. Biffle, his…
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) has decided to fine Uber €825 million ($966 million) under European data protection rules for deactivating driver accounts through automated systems without adequately informing them, according to an August 17 decision reviewed by Reuters. The penalty would be the second-largest ever issued under Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation, behind a €1.2 billion fine imposed on Meta by Ireland in 2023 for unlawfully transferring European Facebook users’ data to the United States, which Meta is appealing. Uber said it would also appeal. “We strongly disagree with this decision and disproportionate fine,” a spokesperson said, adding…
