A Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged with arson related a fire at a mosque in the city last week. The fire caused significant damage to the structure, including a section under construction. No injuries were reported. The criminal complaint alleges that, in the early hours of July 5, 2026, Lang approached the Islamic Center building, ignited an improvised incendiary device, and threw the device into the entryway of…
Howden Group, the London-based insurance broker that’s chasing an initial public offering by 2030, is in talks to raise several billion pounds in new private capital as it seeks to maintain its breakneck expansion. The group, which is already backed by Hg, General Atlantic and Canada’s La Caisse, is working with bankers at Morgan Stanley on the project that will also bring in new external shareholders, people with knowledge of the process said. The slated capital raise, likely to be one of the largest ever undertaken by a private UK business, is a key pillar of founder and Chief Executive…
As Europe’s railways buckle under record heat, roads melt and power grids strain, countries are turning to an array of fixes for aging infrastructure, from drones inspecting tracks and AI-powered sensors to a surprisingly simple tool: white paint. At Norway’s Oslo airport on Wednesday, with temperatures set to hit 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), 10 C above normal for the time of year, workers doused the tarmac with water to keep it cool. It’s a marked shift in a country more used to coping with the cold that reflects how Europe is having to adapt to rising temperatures that…
As high temperatures bake California and strong winds make it more susceptible to fire, voters in the state are being wooed by political candidates with divergent visions for how to protect homes from stepped-up climate risks. California has the nation’s largest home insurance market, according to McKinsey & Co., worth $15 billion. Jane Kim argues that the market has failed and the state should assume responsibility for the costliest climate disasters. Ben Allen says the private market can still work if regulators strengthen consumer protections and create incentives for homeowners and communities to reduce wildfire risk. Those competing philosophies are…

The state’s workers’ compensation premium rates have steadily declined since 2020, with approved rate decreases averaging 10.3% annually over the six-year period. The latest reduction in insurance costs is in addition to a reduced employer assessment rate…
From Michigan Avenue, Saline Township looks like any other farming community, with its corn and soybean fields, silos and grain elevators. Just down the road, though, cranes reach above towering fences at the site of a $16 billion project — one that has turned this town of 2,400 people into the latest U.S. flashpoint over AI data centers. Dubbed “The Barn” by its consortium of developers — Oracle, OpenAI, Related Digital, Blackstone BX.N and Walbridge — the Stargate data center is expected to stretch over 250 acres. Construction is moving ahead despite resistance from residents concerned about its impact on…
The Trump administration is moving to strengthen coordination on artificial intelligence cybersecurity through a new industry clearinghouse to improve the detection and patching of network vulnerabilities, especially in open-source software. The clearinghouse, named Gold Eagle, was rolled out earlier this month by the Treasury Department, Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon, in consultation with AI companies, according to National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, who briefed reporters on the initiative July 14. It will allow for the exchange of information about potential vulnerabilities and is a product of the AI executive order President Donald Trump issued last month. The administration…
On July 1st, security researchers at Sysdig published something they had never documented before. A ransomware attack that ran from start to finish without a single human directing it, an AI agent alone at every stage. If you work in security, risk or insurance, the automation is the least interesting part of this story. Notice instead that the attack could never have paid out, even for a victim who did everything right. So let me tell you what happened, in plain terms. An AI agent broke into a company’s systems, worked its way to the central database, encrypted everything it…
The Trump administration is working to develop new safety requirements governing how autonomous vehicles behave on the road as the industry contends with a series of safety mishaps. Officials aim to finalize the new requirements before the end of President Donald Trump’s current term, Jonathan Morrison, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s top official, said in an interview. NHTSA initially plans to seek comment from the public and industry stakeholders with the goal of identifying “behavioral competencies” for autonomous vehicles, with tests to measure performance. The goal is to craft objective safety standards “so that a manufacturer who is producing…
