A trial is slated to begin in New Mexico on Monday that will test the state’s claims that Meta’s Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms harmed young users’ mental health and its bid for a court order forcing the company to make changes. The case, which will be tried before a judge in Santa Fe, stems from a lawsuit filed by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, a Democrat, accusing the social media giant of designing its platforms to addict young users and failing to protect children from sexual exploitation on its platforms. Samsung Electronics must pay a $392 million lump sum for a license to use ZTE’s patents for mobile phones, London’s High Court ruled on Friday [May 1] in the English leg of the companies’ global licensing dispute. ZTE has brought parallel lawsuits against Samsung in China, Germany and Brazil as the two companies battle over the terms on which Samsung can use ZTE’s patents, and most importantly the cost. The patents are needed to ensure smartphones can access networks. Samsung sued ZTE in London in December 2024 seeking a determination of the fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory – or FRAND –…
A new analysis suggests Americans are being overcharged by $150 billion annually to insure their homes, autos and businesses — and it proposes federal guardrails so that a public beset by affordability pressures could see savings. The analysis by the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator obtained exclusively by The Associated Press details how insurers are paying out less on claims after an accident, natural disaster or other misfortune than they did decades ago. For every $1 collected in premiums, insurers reimbursed 62 cents for claims in 2024, down from an average loss ratio of 80 cents in the 1980s and 1990s. The…

If you are on any social media platform, you’ve likely seen them. Medical professionals who are gaining a following because of the funny way they portray the medical community. Medical professionals who are fighting against misinformation (as they define it). Medical professionals who are selling their own products, or their content, including advertisements for someone else’s products. It used to be that to get medical advice, you had to go to your doctor–the one in your town, who had an office and everyone knew where “Doc” was, especially if he wasn’t in the office that day. Today, you can hear…
Iran said it had forced a U.S. warship to turn back from entering the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, but a U.S. official denied a report that it had been struck by Iranian missiles, according to an Axios journalist. Iran’s navy said it had prevented “American-Zionist” warships entering the Strait of Hormuz area by issuing a “swift and decisive warning.” Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency said two missiles had hit the warship near the port of Jask at the southern entrance to the strait, where Iran’s navy has a base, but a senior U.S. official immediately denied the report, Axios’…
An attorney representing the Trump administration informed a U.S. District Court Friday evening that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has begun offering new appointments to disaster workers whose contracts the agency did not renew in January, reversing a controversial decision that prompted a coalition of labor unions, scientific groups and local governments to sue the administration. FEMA has “initiated contact to offer new appointments” to term-limited staff whose contracts expired the first three weeks of January, U.S. Attorney Craig H. Missakian wrote in a notice submitted to the U.S. District Court in San Francisco Friday. The notice comes after months…
Fermat Capital Management has invested in the Asian Development Bank’s first-ever catastrophe bonds, designed to shield Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan against specific types of natural disasters. The two sovereign bonds — each $80 million in size and with a three-year tenor — will pay out to impacted communities if predefined levels of precipitation are breached, or if earthquakes reach particular magnitudes, regardless of actual losses. “Fermat is generally called upon to be the lead investor in first-of-its-kind deals such as this one,” a spokesperson for the Connecticut-based firm said in an emailed response to questions, confirming it had participated in the…
A United Airlines aircraft on Sunday struck a light pole and a trailer during its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport, the New Jersey State Police said. The underside and tire of United Airlines Flight 169 struck a light pole and tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike around 2 p.m., according to a New Jersey State Police spokesperson. The Federal Aviation Administration said the Boeing 767-400 landed safely and was arriving from Venice, Italy. “Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft,” said a United spokesperson. “We will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident and…
A new report from the Government Accountability Office finds that average premium increases between risk levels are larger for wind than for wildfire. Between 2019 and 2024, homes in areas classified as severe or extreme wind risk had premiums about 58% higher on average–approximately $1,294 more per year–than similar homes in major wind risk areas, the next lower category. By comparison, premiums for homes in severe or extreme wildfire risk areas were about 8% higher–roughly $181 more annually–than those in major wildfire risk areas. The findings highlight differences in how premiums vary across catastrophe risk categories, particularly at the highest…
