Last week, as temperatures in Europe soared and France recorded its highest-ever average temperature, Bloomberg conducted a poll of its clients — including traders, portfolio managers and strategists. The question was simple, but important: Is it ever appropriate to wear shorts to work? Only 45% said yes, which is, frankly, more than I expected. The resistance to shorts in formal offices is powerful, rooted in centuries of traditions and a sense of decorum that stretches across oceans. But temperatures have been steadily rising in recent years, with Europe — where most buildings and schools have noair conditioning — warming faster…
Sensitive lists of components and suppliers, and photos of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models are part of files posted on the dark web by the ransomware group that stole data from the U.S. firm’s Indian supplier Tata Electronics, according to documents and a source. The exposure threatens the carefully negotiated business of building the iPhone, which Apple assembles from a thicket of suppliers worldwide. It could also upset Apple and its relationship with Tata given most of the supplier arrangements are fiercely protected by Apple, and could also hand rivals, counterfeiters and its own vendors a view of who…
Iran reiterated its determination to control maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, raising the stakes ahead of fresh talks in Qatar on formally ending its war with the US. Speaking to state television, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran wants to work out an agreement with Oman, which borders the southern side of the vital waterway, to oversee ships passing through Hormuz. But Iran will move forward with its own plans “if for any reason Oman is not interested in doing so,” he said. “We have warned the Omanis that other countries have no right to interfere in…
Uber Technologies Inc. said it has wound down its robotaxi offering with Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo in Phoenix, the latest relationship twist between two companies that simultaneously function as partners and competitors. The Arizona capital was the first market where Waymo offered paid passenger rides on its own ride-hailing app in 2020. In 2023, it signed a multiyear deal with the ridesharing giant and began offering a subset of its robotaxi fleet on the Uber app later that year. Under the arrangement, the two companies used Waymo vehicles for both robotaxi trips and on-demand food deliveries. Phoenix “was an intentionally limited…

In a unanimous opinion, the New Jersey Supreme Court has upheld lower court rulings that paramedics who attempted to intubate an infant following the orders of a doctor in two phone calls are entitled to immunity under the state’s Emergency Medical Services Act (EMSA). Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secured a settlement with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals to resolve claims that the company engaged in an illegal kickback scheme that improperly influenced prescriptions paid for by Texas Medicaid. Under the settlement, the company will pay $33,998,000.00 to the State. Attorney General Paxton sued AstraZeneca under the Texas Health Care Program Fraud Prevention Act (“THFPA”). Texas’s lawsuit alleged that AstraZeneca provided free nursing services and reimbursement support to prescribers and paid third-parties to deploy nurses and other healthcare professionals to recommend AstraZeneca drugs to medical providers under the guise of non-branded counseling. These inducements were designed to…
A federal jury failed to reach a verdict in the arson case over the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history. U.S. District Judge Anne Hwang declared a mistrial after jurors told her Friday they were divided and unable to reach a unanimous decision in the case of Jonathan Rinderknecht. Hwang scheduled a retrial for Oct. 19 at the request of prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that Rinderknecht was lonely and resentful toward society and used a barbecue lighter to start a brush fire on a Pacific Palisades hillside just after midnight on Jan. 1, 2025. The government said the blaze smoldered…
Blistering heat and strong winds Sunday stoked wildfires across the West after three firefighters were killed a day earlier in Colorado while battling a blaze along the state’s border with Utah. The National Weather Service said wildfire conditions “remain critical” across the Southwest, with risk high in the Four Corners region where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah intersect. The agency warned of “extreme fire behavior” along the Utah-Colorado border, where “rapid fire growth is likely.” The firefighters were killed and two sustained burn injuries when they were overcome Saturday by flames from fast-moving fires. They deployed emergency protective shelters…
