A California hotel is paying $2.75 million for failing to comply with a state law that requires offering available positions to former employees based on seniority after pandemic-related layoffs. The California Labor Commissioner’s Office secured the settlement for 24 workers who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The settlement resolves allegations that the Anaheim Marriott Hotel failed to comply with California’s Right to Recall law. The law was enacted in 2021. The law required covered employers to offer available positions to qualified former employees based on seniority before hiring other workers. The LCO investigated claims that hospitality workers laid…
By Nathaniel Cline– Virginia Mercury Virginia is closer to regulating self-driving vehicles, which have steadily increased nationwide despite continued concerns over safety. Despite crashes that have led to restrictions in some areas, other states, such as Arizona and Texas, have continued to permit testing and deployment. With interest in the technology growing in Virginia, lawmakers are trying to get ahead of some of the issues that have arisen. Last year, Virginia leaders signed off on a plan to bring transportation officials, law enforcement, state lawmakers, and various experts together in a work group to consider rules around the use of…
Four Republican U.S. senators on Thursday proposed repealing landmark California vehicle emissions rules in a bid to prevent the state from imposing stricter tailpipe requirements than the federal government. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in June sent the Republican-controlled Congress state vehicle emissions rules for potential repeal, saying the waivers granted under the Clean Air Act for California environmental regulations approved under prior Democratic administrations should have been sent to lawmakers under the Congressional Review Act. California sued to block the action in federal court, saying it was illegal to send the waivers to the Senate under the Congressional Review…

A proposed deal between Iran and Oman that would give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz is not easily workable due to U.S. sanctions and restrictive insurance clauses on any payments, four industry sources said. Until U.S.-Israeli airstrikes at the end of February unleashed war in Iran, the narrow waterway between the Gulf and the Indian Ocean was the main route for about a fifth of world oil supplies and other vital goods. It was freely open to all ships with no fees. Control of the strait has been the biggest sticking point in…
