Competition among European non-life primary insurers is increasing, despite rising claims inflation, according to S&P Global Ratings in a report on the European insurance sector. Property/casualty commercial insurers will face more pressure in 2025, said S&P, explaining that margins will likely narrow as the market continues to soften while reinsurance rates are still elevated. At the same time, however, combined ratios will remain below 100%, said S&P in its report titled “European Insurance Midyear Outlook 2025: Strong Finish Ahead.” (Combined ratios below 100 indicate underwriting profits). Claims inflation exceeded consumer price index (CPI) inflation in recent years and “will remain…
At least seven ships – mainly dry bulk vessels – have crossed the Strait of Hormuz in the past 24 hours, in line with muted activity in recent days, shipping data showed on Monday, while talks between Iran and the United States have stalled. The vessels included ships leaving from Iraqi ports and one dry bulk vessel from an Iranian port, according to ship tracking data from Kpler and separate satellite analysis from data analytics specialists SynMax. Shipping traffic passing through the crucial waterway at the entrance to the Gulf during an uneasy ceasefire between Washington and Tehran represents a…
Georgia insurance commissioner John King used his statutory authority to bar property insurance policy cancellations until further notice, due to wildfires that have displaced homeowners across the state. King’s April 23 directive bars cancellations for nonpayment of premiums in 91 of Georgia’s 159 counties, where fires this month have forced more than 200 residents to flee. Some 120 homes were destroyed, and 1,000 were under threat over the weekend, the Associated Press reported. “In a significant number of these counties, consumers will be unable to access mailing and postal services,” King’s directive notes. “Without access to these services, residents are…
Global and regional natural catastrophe activity and loss totals were lower in the first quarter of 2026 than in comparable quarters of previous years, leaving the re/insurance industry well-positioned as it heads into the more costly second and third quarters, according to Gallagher Re. “We now estimate that it would require a single event (or a series of large events) resulting in an insured loss of at least $115 billion to $125 billion – above the expected average annual catastrophe losses – to meaningfully impact the trajectory of pricing in the property sector of the industry,” Gallagher Re said. Q1…
The most-recognizable diversity policy in sports is facing the biggest challenge in its history. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump, is calling for the end of the National Football League’s Rooney Rule, a provision that requires teams to interview at least two minority candidates for head coaching jobs. He says the rule “brazenly violates Florida law” and he wants the league to drop enforcement of it by May 1. Pressure also is building in Washington, where at least two federal agencies have advanced legal arguments over the past four months that may imperil…

The state of Michigan was cleared of liability Thursday in a disastrous 2020 dam failure that flooded communities, destroyed more than 100 homes and drained a popular lake. Court of Claims Judge James Redford acknowledged the “real and lasting damages” of the Edenville Dam failure. But he said days of relentless rain and an unprecedented 100-year flood triggered the calamity in the Midland area, not the state-authorized level of Wixom Lake. Redford cited experts who said a lower lake level before the disaster was unlikely to have prevented the catastrophe. He also said state regulators had “received by default” a…
A former Colorado funeral home owner who helped her ex-husband hide nearly 200 decomposing bodies was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday in a case that forced the state to clamp down on an industry plagued by repeated scandal and notoriously lax oversight. Carie Hallford faced between 25 and 35 years in prison under a plea agreement. Some family members of those whose bodies were left to rot had urged Judge Eric Bentley to impose the maximum sentence. But the judge said Carie Hallford made credible claims of being a victim of domestic violence and her ex-husband, Jon Hallford,…
