Firefighters are making progress on a large blaze at a warehouse that blackened the skies near downtown Los Angeles and prompted shelter-in-place orders in the area due to the risk of hazardous air. Fire crews were able to remove the walls to parts of the burning warehouse, paving the way for a full knockdown. Los Angeles Fire Department Fire Chief Jaime Moore said he expect the air to start clearing up soon after, LAist is reporting. Moore said firefighters have held the blaze to half the building, but chemicals used for refrigeration and the building’s layout have made fighting this…
No offense to the members of the media, but the media tends to blow this stuff up. That’s how Jim Williamson, president and chief executive officer of insurer and reinsurer Everest Group Ltd., prefaced his answer to a question about managing cybersecurity risks in the age of AI during the S&P Global Ratings 42nd Annual Insurance Conference last week. “On cyber risk, we are in the same arms race we were before AI,” Williamson believes, chiding the media for exaggerating the Mythos model story and the ability of bad guys to get into companies and exploit faults at a pace.…
Europe is facing another summer of intense wildfires, but firefighters who will be on the frontline warn that they’re entering the season under-funded, under-equipped and under-staffed. The continent experienced its worst season for wildfires on record last year, with blazes burning through over one million hectares across, an area equivalent to the whole of the island of Cyprus. The wettest winter in years in parts of the Mediterranean has led to vegetation overgrowing in many forests, and firefighters fear extreme heat could turn bushes and grass into fuel for fires. The European Union is gearing up for the season, stationing…

Hail volatility and aging roofs are driving higher residential replacement severity, a new study by data analytics and technology provider Verisk finds. Roof losses didn’t slow despite a 20% decline in overall claims volume in 2025. Data showed that average U.S. residential replacement costs jumped 33% and repair costs climbed 25% in 2025, compared to the prior four-year average. Average residential roof replacement costs reached $17,631 in 2025, with repair costs averaging $4,699. Residential roof replacement cost value (RCV) declined to $23 billion in 2025, compared to an average of $24.4 billion from 2021 to 2024, the study found. The…
The U.S. faces a widening gap between growing flood risk and the take-up of flood insurance, potentially exposing the nation to more than $375 billion in aggregated uninsured flood losses from a 1-in-100-year event, according to a new whitepaper from Moody’s. The growing insurance protection gap, now at 65%, poses a significant financial risk to households and local governments, which have long relied on FEMA Specific Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) maps primarily based on riverine flooding and generally don’t account for flood risk from storm surge, sea level rise, or extreme precipitation, the Moody’s report said. This exposes counties to…
A heat wave gripping western Europe is forecast to strengthen this week, with days of dangerously hot and humid conditions and record-breaking temperatures in France, the UK, Spain and Germany. The heat — driven by a high-pressure heat dome and supported by a developing El Niño — has caused widespread disruptions, with school closures in France and a World Cup viewing party canceled in Spain. Forecasts for unusually warm temperatures continue through July, making this only an early summer test for the world’s fastest-warming continent. “There is a good chance we will see more rounds of heat this summer,” said…
Data centers are expected to consume twice as much power and water by 2030 as they expand to meet the surge in demand from artificial intelligence, according to U.N. researchers. Unless governments heed the rising environmental costs of AI, the rapid rollout could also strain scarce land resources and create mountains of electronic waste, the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health warned in a recent report. Here are a few takeaways: Last year, data centers consumed 448 terawatt-hours of electricity globally, more than the whole of Saudi Arabia. AI accounted for a fifth of the total. They…
Iran said there had been “major progress” in all-night discussions with the US, as the warring sides try to reach a peace deal within two months. The countries began technical talks in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock over the weekend, following their interim agreement last week that led to a ceasefire extension and Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz.Plenty of obstacles remain, however, including Israel’s war in Lebanon against Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group. At one stage on Sunday, Iran said it would suspend talks — but never actually did — after US President Donald Trump threatened military action against the…
As the second quarter of 2026 gets underway, cyber insurance trends are already pointing in a new direction, with cyber-enabled fraud surpassing ransomware as the risk causing the biggest concern for C-suite executives. This shift underscores the reality that fraud losses continue to balloon and that many policyholders are surprised that these losses are often covered only in part, or not at all, under many cyber insurance policies. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 report, a recent survey of C-suite executives found that fraud and phishing have overtaken ransomware as the top cyber risks worrying CEOs,…
