In the Silicon Valley enclave of Atherton, a six-bedroom, nine-bath mansion featuring a theater, a private rose garden and a spa hit the market earlier this year for nearly $32 million. It found a buyer within 72 hours, more than half a million dollars above asking. Even in one of the world’s most exclusive communities, the deal was remarkably fast — a testament to the fresh wave of tech riches washing over the San Francisco Bay Area from a booming AI industry and blockbuster IPOs. Nowhere is that wealth more pronounced than Atherton, a longtime billionaire refuge that’s now seeing…
Maine is in the process of adjusting how it regulates the manufactured housing industry and helps support residents of mobile home parks. The changes come as a growing number of communities across the state have been purchased by out-of-state investors and follow a report that found deficiencies in the state’s ability to respond to complaints. The Maine Manufactured Housing Board, which has been responsible for upholding mobile home park community standards and manufacturing quality for almost 50 years, had its last meeting in early June and was dissolved on July 29. Its four-person staff has been moved out of the…
The U.S. government proposed deep cuts to water supply for Arizona, California and Nevada during dry years in a new plan it released on Friday to operate the drought-stricken Colorado River. Lawsuits from states could challenge the federal intervention and could mean years more uncertainty for a river that provides water to one in 10 Americans, irrigates land producing 15% of U.S. food output and generates power for 6 million people in seven states. Those seven states — Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, California and Nevada, known as the basin states — were unable to agree on how to…
New York officials sued prediction market platform Kalshi for potentially billions of dollars on Friday, calling it an “illegal, unlicensed gambling operation” that includes sports wagering as the state seeks to halt its operations and force the company to forfeit …
OpenAI has discovered other instances in which autonomous agents have escaped containment as the company expands its investigation of the hacking incident at tech firm Hugging Face that drew global attention this month, two people familiar with the matter said on July 31. The new breakouts were uncovered during the company’s publicly announced investigation into how one of its agents escaped what was meant to be a contained testing environment this month, the two people said, and OpenAI is now looking into those instances as well. One of the sources said that the escapes were limited in nature and that…
Amgen Inc. experienced a cyber incident that involved the theft of patient information and proprietary data stored in cloud servers, it said in a filing July 31, the latest large healthcare company to suffer a data breach. The drugmaker is still assessing the damage but said it’s not likely to have a material impact on financial results. A representative for Amgen declined to comment beyond the filing. Amgen detected unauthorized access to the data on third-party cloud servers in July. It subsequently learned some of the data, including patient protected health information, has been exfiltrated from the cloud environment. “To…
Cleanup efforts were underway in parts of upstate New York last Thursday following two days of heavy rains that led to flash flooding, water rescues and the destruction of a centuries-old grist mill. Nearly a foot (30 centimeters) of rain fell in parts of Columbia and Rensselaer counties near Albany during a 48-hour period ending Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said. Albany, the state capital, was hit with 8 inches (20 centimeters) of rain over the same period. First responders in Albany and several other towns said they rescued people from their homes and vehicles on Wednesday as waterways…
President Donald Trump blamed Minnesota state officials with whom he has feuded for cyberattacks on multiple water systems there, despite reports that officials suspected Iranian involvement in the disruptions. The New York Times, citing U.S. and state officials, reported that preliminary assessments suggested the attacks were the work of Iranian hackers. Trump, speaking during a cabinet meeting at the Camp David presidential retreat on Friday, dismissed those findings. “We heard in Minnesota there was a cyber attack, and they blame it on Iran. I don’t think so. I think I blame it on Minnesota because they’re grossly incompetent,” Trump said.…
nthropic PBC said its artificial intelligence models breached three organizations during cybersecurity tests that went awry, a little more than a week after its chief rival, OpenAI, disclosed a similar incident. Anthropic said in a blog post Thursday that it made the discovery after performing a review of its own cybersecurity tests, following OpenAI’s announcement of a breach. In both the OpenAI and Anthropic tests, the AI models were able to access the internet from within testing environments that should have been sealed off, according to Anthropic’s blog. The company said it reviewed 141,006 evaluation tests and found three instances…
